While, spring is the season known for
heavy-duty cleaning around the home, many of you will be getting your homes
ready for the holidays or for family visits. I've got a helpful tip on how to
get your carpets looking their best in a more natural, and less harmful and expensive way.
Instead of using those toxic often allergy inducing carper cleaning products
use 3% hydrogen peroxide (diluted or undiluted), which you can buy at the
dollar store or for an even better price, at Sam’s Club (you will want at least
a couple bottles depending on your carpet
space). Hydrogen peroxide is a natural chemical that acts as a disinfectant and
can bleach and clean wonderfully. Always test it first, but you may have just
found your favorite stain remover! You can also try this recipe that I created, as well.
Natural Carpet Cleaner Detergent
What you will need:
- 1½ quarts of hot (NOT boiling) water
- ¼ cup of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (it’s the regular hydrogen peroxide that you can get at any store)
- 1½ Tablespoons of White Vinegar
- 1½ Tablespoons of Dish Soap (ex: Seventh Generation or the blue kind of Dawn)
- About ⅛ of a teaspoon of your favorite essential oil(s) Examples are: lavender, tea tree oil, rosemary, vanilla, etc. Just a word of warning though, do not use too much essential oils, as oils will trap dirt to your carpet fibers after your carpet has been cleaned. This means that your carpet could get dirtier quicker. You can always bypass this possibility by not using any essential oils; however these oils also have powerful antimicrobial and antibacterial properties and make your homemade solution smell amazing! If you do choose to use essential oils a good idea may be to go over your carpet with just hot water to rinse it (which is recommended by most if not all carpet cleaners companies using their products, as well).

Mix all of the ingredients together (add the dish soap to
the water and not the water to the dish soap). Pour into your carpet cleaning machine and see how great
your carpet’s look! This will not only clean your carpets and make them look almost like new, but it will also disinfect them, too! Let me know how this works for you!
